Search begins for illegal dumpers of asbestos in UK
The search is on for the people responsible for dumping a truckload of asbestos containing waste on a road in the UK.About three metric tons of asbestos was dumped on a road in Lovers Lane, Great Bentley, according to the East Anglian Daily Times. Now authorities are doing their best to try to find the person responsible for the "fly tipping," British slang for illegal dumping.
Nick Turner, who works on environmental matters for the Tendring District Council, told the news source that such acts are extremely dangerous
"This is environmental vandalism pure and simple and we want to catch those responsible." he said. "It will cost several hundred pounds of taxpayers’ money to get it cleared away and there is also considerable inconvenience for people living in that area while the road remains shut."
The disposal of asbestos is highly regulated as exposure to the naturally occurring substance can cause a range of serious illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer that attacks the lining of many internal organs.
Turner told the news source that whoever was responsible for the dumping could face a fine of up to £50,000.
