Safety concerns arise over asbestos removal at UK health center
The potential removal of asbestos from the roof of the Walton Health Centre in Surrey, England, has caused some local residents to become concerned about the dangerous mineral, reports the Surrey Herald. One anonymous source told the news provider that work to remove the carcinogenic material from the property is scheduled to begin this weekend. The source added that residents live next door to the building, but have not been told about the removal project.
However, National Health Service (NHS) officials in Surrey explained that the work would be completed by a professional contractor while the health center is closed.
"All the work is being done in accordance with health and safety guidance, which includes keeping the relevant authorities informed," said Jamie Andrews, head of estates at NHS Surrey.
It is important that asbestos is properly handled and removed from buildings as exposure to the dangerous mineral has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.
