Asbestos Litigation

Roofing firm caused asbestos to be released in UK town
A roofing company in the UK was recently fined for allowing asbestos fibers to be spread throughout a town.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, Britain's federal health authority, Concept Roofing and Cladding Services Ltd. was hired to clean and repair roofs in a Leicestershire town. The firm used pressure washers to spray asbestos roofing panels, which caused the carcinogenic substance to be spread throughout the town.

"Concept Roofing and Cladding knew the roofing panels contained asbestos and should have known that the use of a pressure washer was entirely inappropriate," HSE inspector Stephen Farthing said. "The actions of this company caused a great deal of worry and inconvenience for local people and business, some of whom had to leave their premises for a considerable amount of time."

The release of asbestos into the environment poses a great deal of serious health risks to those in the area as the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

Concept Roofing and Cladding was fined £12,000 by the HSE and also ordered to pay £22,375 in costs.
