Reopening of public baths in UK delayed after asbestos discovery
Swimmers looking to take a break from the heat at the Moseley Road Baths in Balsall Heath, UK, were disappointed recently when it was announced that the baths will not reopen until this winter after asbestos was discovered.According to the Birmingham Mail, a significant amount of asbestos-containing material was found in the basement area of the historic baths, which had been originally closed for repair work in December.
The news source reports that the newly discovered presence of asbestos will be costly for the community, as the price tag to remove the carcinogenic material is expected to reach £80,000. The asbestos abatement work will also push back the reopening date by 10 weeks, the news provider said.
"There are going to be a lot of disappointed children until it gets sorted," Jen Austin, an advocate of the baths who has been clamoring for the work to be completed, told the news source.
The removal of asbestos from public areas is critical as the inhalation of the naturally occurring mineral fibers can cause a range of serious illnesses including lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma.
