Philippines labor group asks for asbestos removal from Manila building
A labor organization in the Philippines has called upon a government agency to remove asbestos from a building in Manila.
The Associated Labor Unions has reportedly asked the Department of Labor and Employment to order the asbestos abatement work at the Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) building, according to the Philippine Star.
"This is to bring to your attention and immediate intervention on the possible exposure of asbestos disposal workers and the thousands of employees of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Manila for improper removal of asbestos from its building," ALU national vice president Gerard Seno wrote in a letter to a government official and the person in charge of the building.
Seno also reportedly said that there was evidence of asbestos removal work at the site violating safety codes.
It is vital that all proper precautions are taken during asbestos removal work as the inhalation of the naturally occurring carcinogenic material can cause a number of serious illnesses such as asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare and deadly cancer.
Among the violations alleged by Seno is that workers were not properly equipped to handle asbestos.
