New Zealand fishing ban stems from asbestos concerns
Fishing has reportedly been banned from the major export wharf in Luganville, New Zealand, after fears arose from potential asbestos contamination, reports Radio New Zealand International. The ban was issued by the technical advisory committee on maritime affairs, according to the news source. Chairman of the committee Eric Puyo Festa explained that a ship called the MV Rodin that contained asbestos sunk near the wharf.
The vessel, which was donated to a charity five years ago, has experienced a number of engine problems and other mechanical issues, the news source said. Festa noted that the fishing ban will ensure the safety of Luganville residents. He added that his office is currently looking at ways to salvage the vessel, a process that could end up costing a significant amount of money.
Precautions such as this fishing ban are crucial when dealing with asbestos, as exposure to the carcinogenic material has been linked to the development of a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
