New South Wales gives $3.5 million for mesothelioma research
The Australian state of New South Wales recently allocated millions of dollars to an institute to help it with mesothelioma research.The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute will receive $3.5 million in funding from the state government to help it find ways to treat mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers, according to the Herald Sun.
The funding is a boon to asbestos victims in Australia, which has the highest incidence rate of malignant mesothelioma in the world, according to Chief Cancer Officer and CEO of the Cancer Institute of NSW Professor David Currow.
"The translational research ... will see NSW as a world leader in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of mesothelioma," he told the news source. "These grants are also good news for people across NSW affected by acute myeloid leukaemia, recipients of bone marrow transplants and people diagnosed with Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma."
Many people who worked blue collar jobs in decades past have found themselves dealing with an asbestos-related disease, which also include asbestosis and lung cancer. These industries relied heavily on the naturally occurring substance as an insulator and flame retardant.
