More asbestos than expected found at UK council house
A large amount of asbestos was recently found during renovation work at the headquarters of a municipal authority in the UK.The Derby City Council House closed at the end of last year to undergo $34 million worth of renovations, according to the BBC.
"[Testing] confirmed significant amounts of asbestos in the internal structure of the Council House," a council spokesman told the news source. "Although the amount is greater than hoped for the council already has licensed contractors on standby to commence the strip-out and has budgeted for the work."
Despite the extra asbestos, the council said that it does not believe that the renovation project will go over budget.
It is vital that asbestos is handled properly during renovation work because if the deadly mineral fibers become airborne and are inhaled, they can cause serious health issues. The inhalation of asbestos fibers can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer that attacks the thin membrane that lines the chest, abdomen and many of the body's internal organs.
The news source reports that the new council house will be open by Christmas 2012.
