Massive amount of asbestos removed from Ireland dump site
A significant amount of asbestos was removed from a dump site in Ireland's Cork harbor recently, according to the Sunday Business Post. The news source reports that the asbestos that was removed was a by-product of the Raybestos Manhattan brakepad facility, which ultimately closed down in 1980. It was believed that Raybestos had buried approximately 800 tons of asbestos at the dump site, according to the news provider.
The firm reportedly had a license to bury 1,000 tons of asbestos, but when the site was excavated, there were more than 2,700 tons discovered.
The decision to remove the asbestos was made after a number of agencies agreed on an action plan to excavate the former Raybestos facility, according to the news source.
It is important that asbestos is handled and disposed of properly as exposure to the carcinogenic material can lead to the development of asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs.
