Massachusetts officials consider asbestos abatement project at elementary schoolSelectmen from Westborough, Massachusetts, are reportedly considering a request for $250,000 to replace pipes and remove asbestos from Hastings Elementary School, reports the MetroWest Daily News.
According to the news source, Town Manager Jim Malloy said during the recent town meeting that many of the pipes in the school's heating and air conditioning system are leaking and asbestos is located in the ceiling tiles.
The selectmen asked the town manager if it would be possible for the project to wait until the town meeting in the fall, but Malloy said that the School Department wants to take care of the work over the summer while the students are on break.
"If we wait [to vote] until the fall, we can't start until 2012," Malloy said.
Selectman Lydia Goldblatt reportedly asked Malloy to speak with the company that installed the new pipes that have caused problems, to see if it would contribute to the project, according to the news source.
It is crucial that asbestos is properly handled and removed during many renovation projects as exposure to the carcinogenic mineral can lead to the development of asbestosis, malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer.
