Lung cancer rate increasing in British women over 60
The rate of lung cancer in British women aged 60 and over rose significantly between 1975 and 2008, according to Cancer Research UK, a cancer charity.According to the organization, nearly 5,700 women over 60 were diagnosed with lung cancer in 1975, while more than 15,100 developed the deadly disease in 2008. The total rate increased from 88 per 100,000 in 1975 to 190 per 100,000 in 2008.
Women over the age of 80 showed the largest increase of any, as their rates of lung cancer more than tripled during the period, according to a release from Cancer Research UK.
For men, the numbers are completely different, as more than 23,000 were diagnosed with lung cancer in 1975, while only 19,400 men developed the condition in 2008.
One cause of lung cancer is exposure to asbestos, as the deadly mineral fibers can become trapped in a person's lungs. In addition to lung cancer, asbestos exposure can cause asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
