Longtime UK electrician dies of mesothelioma
A former UK electrician who worked in the field for nearly 40 years reportedly developed malignant mesothelioma after inhaling asbestos fibers for years, which ultimately led to his death.According to the Burton Mail, Cyril Butt died in May at the age of 80 after he spent much of his life working for the Central Electricity Generating Board. Doctors reportedly discovered the cancer in the lining of Butt's lungs and gave him a mesothelioma diagnosis last October.
The news source reports that consultant physician Dr. Ian Johnston said Butt began experiencing weight loss and chest pain last August.
In a statement written before his death, Butt said that he worked around asbestos-containing boilers and was unable to avoid exposure to the carcinogen.
In addition to mesothelioma - a rare cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding many of the body's inner organs - the inhalation of deadly asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. All told, asbestos-related illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, estimates the World Health Organization.
