Inquests: Former UK secretary, engineer died of malignant mesothelioma
Two recent UK inquests heard that a woman who worked as a secretary for the London Asbestos Company during the 1960s and a former Merchant Navy engineer died of malignant mesothelioma.

The Bournemouth Echo reports that 73-year-old Patricia Morgan, who worked for the asbestos firm, had samples of the carcinogenic material in her desk and never received protection or warnings.

In March 2010, however, she was diagnosed with the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma, and later died as a result of the deadly disease, according to the news source.

Trevor Pitman, who worked as an engineer in the Merchant Navy when asbestos lagging was typically used in ships, died at the age of 92 last March, also as a result of mesothelioma. Pitman, who continued working as a surveyor after his time in the Navy, regularly inspected asbestos-containing buildings without protection, the inquest heard.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. Such asbestos-related illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
