Inquest: Former UK builder contracted mesothelioma through occupational asbestos exposure
A UK inquest heard recently that former builder Kenneth Lam passed away in May after being exposed to asbestos throughout his career and subsequently developing malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.According to the Westminster Chronicle, Lam began working as a builder after he completed his national service in Egypt and Cyprus. He was ultimately diagnosed with mesothelioma last January, and was subsequently admitted to the hospital a number of times.
The news source reports that Westminster coroner Dr. Fiona Wilcox said Lam worked in demolition for the majority of his life. Wilcox added that she was sad to report that Lam had been exposed to asbestos on the job, which ultimately led to his death.
"It's unfortunately something that I record very often, but it's through coroners' courts that the dangers of asbestos were discovered," she said.
Aside from malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos and the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers has also been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis.
