Inquest: Former Naval mechanic died from asbestos exposure
An inquest in Billingborough, UK, was told recently that a former Naval mechanic was exposed to asbestos during his career and died of malignant mesothelioma in October as a result.According to Bourne Local, the inquest heard 81-year-old Ronald Carter was exposed to the carcinogenic material while working as a boiler stoker and mechanic in the engine room of a Naval ship.
During the inquest, coroner Gordon Ryall read a statement prepared by Carter prior to his death that said all of the ship's pipes were lined with asbestos and that he was unable to avoid exposure because the pipes were found throughout the sleeping quarters. The asbestos, Carter said, was disturbed on a regular basis.
Carter's daughter Lynne said following the inquest that more should be done to educate the public about mesothelioma.
"He was a fit man and there was no indication he was ill," she said. "But once it is diagnosed there is nothing you can do. People should know about it."
According to the UK newspaper The Mirror, mesothelioma kills approximately one person every five hours.
