Mesothelioma News

Former teacher, Royal Navy serviceman succumbs to asbestos-related illness
The former head of economics for the Arnold School in the UK recently died of the industrial disease malignant mesothelioma, after he likely came into contact with asbestos during a stint with the Royal Navy.

According to the Blackpool Gazette, Michael Butterworth, 76, ultimately succumbed to the rare form of cancer in March, four years after he had been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The family of Butterworth believes that the asbestos exposure likely occurred while the man served for two years in the Royal Navy during his twenties.

"He lived life as best he could and he never talked about his cancer," his wife, Maureen, told the news provider. "He never gave in to it and carried on as best he could, and that was how he dealt with it."

Blackpool Victoria Hospital consultant pathologist Dr. Mark Sissons said that a post-mortem examination indicated Butterworth had a significant tumor in his chest, ruling that the death was caused by malignant mesothelioma.

According to the UK newspaper the Mirror, mesothelioma kills approximately one person every five hours in Britain. Exposure to asbestos can also lead to the development of lung cancer and asbestosis.
