Former mayor looks to radiotherapy for his, others' mesothelioma
The former mayor of Swindon, a town in Southwest England's Wiltshire County, has declared his support for a radiotherapy in the area, which he says might help the many British Rail workers who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma.Rex Barnett, 72, found out he had the disease during his final week as mayor of Swindon, according to the town's main newspaper, the Advertiser, which noted that, because so many former employees of the local railway station have been diagnosed with the illness, residents have nicknamed it "Swindon disease."
The former mayor is currently receiving chemotherapy, but he told the news source that having a radiotherapy unit at hand might help the numerous Swindonians battling mesothelioma.
On average, patients with malignant mesothelioma live 16 months past their diagnosis, according to the National Cancer Institute.
According to the Advertiser, Barnett worked for eight years as a railway repairman, fixing carriages and diesel multiple units, which at the time - the late 1950s - were lined with asbestos.
Health and Safety Executive, a UK watchdog group, estimates that 38 working-class adults die every week from the complications of asbestos exposure.
