Former UK worker claimed regular asbestos exposure contributed to death
A former cement worker in the UK claimed in a statement just prior to his death that he helped in the manufacturing of a number of asbestos-containing products throughout his career, reports the Gloucestershire Gazette.According to the news source, 65-year-old John Ormrod died in March of malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
In his statement, Ormrod claimed that despite working with asbestos-containing materials on a regular basis, workers were only given protective masks in certain situations. The man was reportedly diagnosed with mesothelioma in October 2009 and underwent chemotherapy treatment to help stave off the disease, according to the news source.
During an inquest into Ormrod's death, Gloucestershire deputy coroner David Dooley said that he believed a civil asbestos claim had been settled in favor of the Berkeley resident.
According to the UK newspaper the Mirror, malignant mesothelioma kills approximately one person every five hours in Britain.
