Mesothelioma News

Former UK tire manufacturer dies of malignant mesothelioma
A former employee of Avon Rubber, a UK-based manufacturer of rubber products for a variety of industries, died in September as a result of malignant mesothelioma, an inquest heard recently.

The Wiltshire Times reports that 71-year-old Eric Sanders worked for the company between 1955 and 1980. In a statement given prior to his death, Sanders said that his duties until the 1970s involved working with asbestos-containing steam equipment.

"He was working in the tire molding process and they used asbestos," said Sanders' wife, Kathleen. "He had never been ill, he never smoked or anything."

Asbestos has been proven to cause malignant mesothelioma, which is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs. In addition, the dangerous material can cause asbestosis and lung cancer.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.

Assistant deputy coroner Hugh Calloway recorded a verdict of death as a result of an industrial disease, according to the news provider.
