Former UK shipyard worker dies of asbestos-related industrial disease
A coroner ruled recently that a former Merchant Navy shipyard worker in the UK died of malignant mesothelioma, a rare asbestos-related cancer, the News & Star reports.According to the news source, Leslie James Clingan died last year at the age of 72 after he was diagnosed with the deadly disease in 2006. An inquest heard that Clingan's mesothelioma was a result of asbestos exposure.
The inquest heard that Clingan worked in the 1950s as a marine engineer in the Merchant Navy for approximately 10 years, where he was responsible for performing repairs and removing and replacing asbestos-containing materials.
Coroner David Roberts added that the health hazards of asbestos exposure were not known at the time and that precautions were not taken to protect employees. Since the mid-1960s, it has been clear that asbestos exposure can cause deadly diseases such as lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world are killed by asbestos-related diseases each year.
