Mesothelioma News

Former UK printer died of malignant mesothelioma
A former UK worker in the printing industry reportedly died of malignant mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, an inquest was told recently.

The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald reports that 78-year-old Alan Chapman died in October as a result of his inhalation of asbestos more than 20 years ago. Wiltshire's assistant deputy coroner, Ian Singleton, was told that Chapman inhaled the deadly mineral fibers while working as a Linotype operator.

Singleton was also told that Chapman had been diagnosed with mesothelioma in February and that a pathologist found asbestos fibers in lung samples from the former printer. As a result, the assistant deputy coroner ruled Chapman's death was the result of an industrial disease.

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs. In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis.

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of asbestos-related diseases.
