Former UK police officer expects mesothelioma to cut life short
A retired police officer from Hampshire, UK, says he expects to die 22 years earlier than he should because he has developed malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of asbestos-related cancer, reports ThisIsHampshire.net.Robert Chegwidden, 62, claims he was exposed to the deadly material while he investigated fires as part of his police duties between 1968 and 1997, according to the news provider.
Chegwidden also claims that he was exposed to asbestos between 1984 and 1985 when the material was being removed from the police station at which he was based.
Recently, the former police officer settled a compensation claim out of court for an undisclosed amount of money, but the police department has not accepted liability for the asbestos exposure, according to the news provider.
Still, Chegwidden blames his former employers for failing to properly protect their workers from exposure to the dangerous material, which has also been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis.
"No amount of compensation is going to make much difference to me, he told the Daily Echo. "I want a recognition of the risk that I and others were put under. Recognition that people may still be at risk when investigating fires."
