Former UK pipe fitter succumbs to mesothelioma after brief battle
A pipe fitter from the UK who worked in shipyards in Britain, Germany and Finland recently passed away after an 18-month battle with malignant mesothelioma, according to the North-West Evening Mail. The news source reports Kenneth Ernest Clark died at the age of 71 on November 28, and an inquest into his death ruled it as a result of being exposed to asbestos throughout his working career.
Clark's widow, Beryl, told South and East Cumbria deputy coroner Alan Sharp that the mesothelioma diagnosis was extremely difficult after previous tests had come back negative.
"He’d had scans at Newcastle which had come back clear a few years ago and then again he had them when a few work colleagues were diagnosed with pleural plaques at various degrees, but he wasn’t," Beryl Clark said. "When he was diagnosed, it was an absolute bombshell, we were shocked to say the least."
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis. These diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
