Mesothelioma News

Former UK naval veteran died of asbestos-related mesothelioma
A former IT engineer who served in the UK's Royal Navy recently died from malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of asbestos-related cancer, an inquest has ruled.

The Petersfield Post reports that 73-year-old Martin Harbord died last July of the asbestos-related illness, which attacks the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs.

Portsmouth Coroner's Court reportedly heard that Harbord, who previously worked for IBM, had spent time working on ships and submarines during the early 1950s, when he was serving in the Royal Navy.

Coroner David Horsley explained that the time spent on the ships as a youth was likely where he endured the asbestos exposure that led to his mesothelioma diagnosis.

"It is a terrible thing that hides itself for decades in people who are in pretty good shape, and then it appears," he told the inquest.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of asbestos-related diseases.
