Mesothelioma News

Former UK naval mechanic's mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure
A coroner's court in the UK recently heard that a former naval mechanic died of malignant mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure.

Ronald Carter reportedly was exposed to asbestos while working as boiler stoker and mechanic aboard the HMS Abercrombie, according to the Rutland and Stamford Mercury.

The court heard a statement from Carter prepared before his death that said all the pipes in the ship were lagged with asbestos.

Asbestos was commonly found in older vessels as the substance's flame resistant properties made it attractive to shipbuilders.

Coroner Gordon Ryhall said that the exposure to this naturally occurring substance was the cause of Carter's death.

"Mr. Carter was exposed to asbestos," he said. "The exposure during his time in the navy was very common. At the time it wasn’t appreciated what a dangerous material it was."

Asbestos exposure causes a number of serious diseases, not just malignant mesothelioma, which is a rare and deadly cancer that most often attacks the thin membrane that lines the lungs. The inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause asbestosis and lung cancer as well.
