Former UK engineer dies of mesothelioma after regular occupational asbestos exposure
A former manual engineer who worked in that capacity in the UK between 1946 and 1971 died of malignant mesothelioma at the age of 80 last month after being exposed to asbestos on the job for a number of years, according to the St. Albans & Harpenden Review.Geoffrey Culverhouse was reportedly diagnosed with the rare cancer earlier this year, the news source said. Edward Thomas, a coroner for Hertfordshire, where the man lived, said that Culverhouse was regularly exposed to the carcinogenic material on the job for more than two decades.
Doctors at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood made the mesothelioma diagnosis in February, according to the news provider.
As a result of the asbestos exposure on the job, Thomas recorded the cause of death as an industrial disease, the news source said.
Malignant mesothelioma - a rare cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding many of the body's internal organs - is one of a number of illnesses caused by asbestos exposure, as lung cancer and asbestosis can also result.
According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year as a result of an asbestos-related disease.
