Mesothelioma News

Former UK electrician, mechanic died of asbestos-related mesothelioma
A Turnford, UK man who worked as an electrician during the 1960s and 1970s as well as a stint as an auto mechanic died of an asbestos-related illness more than 40 years after being exposed to the carcinogen, an inquest heard recently.

The Hertfordshire Mercury reports that 73-year-old Ronald D'Abreu was often tasked with drilling into asbestos-containing walls and working with brake pads that contained the material.

His regular exposure to the substance caused a tumor to develop to his lungs, which ultimately spread to other parts of his body, the inquest heard.

According to the news source, D'Abreu passed away at Welwyn Garden City's Isabel Hospice last month. During the inquest at Hertford Magistrates' Court last week, Hertfordshire coroner Edward Thomas recorded a death by the industrial disease metastatic mesothelioma.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been linked to lung cancer and asbestosis. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 107,000 people around the world succumb to such illnesses each year.
