Mesothelioma Litigation

Former UK council worker seeks asbestos compensation after developing mesothelioma
A former council and prison service worker in the UK is reportedly seeking asbestos compensation after he was diagnosed with the asbestos-related cancer malignant mesothelioma.

According to the News & Star, 72-year-old James Murray is seeking damages from the Carlisle City Council and his former employer HM Prison Service, claiming he was exposed to asbestos while working in boiler rooms and as an apprentice plumber.

Murray, who claims he began to develop symptoms of malignant mesothelioma last October, was told in May that his life expectancy was approximately one year. He contends that he was not given the proper equipment to protect himself from asbestos exposure during his career.

The news source reports that the number of asbestos-related deaths in Cumbria, England, - where Carlisle is located - has climbed in recent years, with 115 having succumbed to mesothelioma since 2005.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. All told, asbestos-related illnesses kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
