Mesothelioma News

Former UK chemical worker dies of malignant mesothelioma
An inquest heard recently that a former employee of UK chemical company ICI died recently after he had been previously exposed to asbestos in the workplace, the Whitby Gazette reports.

Raymond Wilson, 79, who was also previously employed by the former Whitby Urban District Council, was reportedly exposed to the dangerous material for decades without wearing any protective clothing.

According to the news provider, Wilson was only warned about the dangers of asbestos exposure in the 1980s, towards the end of his career. After being diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer, in July, he died within a month.

The Scarborough County Court heard from Dr. David Russel, who said he found traces of blue and brown asbestos in Wilson's system when he conducted a post-mortem.

Coroner Michael Oakley ruled that Wilson ultimately succumbed to an industrial disease, according to the news provider.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die each year from asbestos-related diseases.
