Mesothelioma News

Former UK carpenter, taxi driver dies of mesothelioma
A retired UK taxi driver who spent much of his career working as a carpenter at a number of power stations reportedly died of malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.

The Bristol Evening Post reports that an inquest at Flax Bourton Coroner's Court heard that Clarence Coombs died last February at Southmead Hospital.

In a statement written one week prior to his death, the 68-year-old Coombs said that he had worked for a variety of Bristol, UK companies as a laborer and carpenter. Specifically, at two power stations, he recalled working with asbestos-lined pipes and powder containing the carcinogen.

According to the news source, a post mortem examination carried out by Ed Sheffield indicated that Coombs had succumbed to the cancer in his right lung.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been proven to cause asbestosis and lung cancer. Such asbestos-related diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
