Former UK boilermaker battles malignant mesothelioma for three years
A former boilermaker from the UK stricken with malignant mesothelioma was recently able to survive for three years after he had been told he might only live for one year, the Derby Evening Telegraph reports.Sid Woolley's family hopes that the man's story could inspire others living with the asbestos-related disease.
"There were times during his illness when we thought it might be the end but he had an ability to rally," said Susan Wilcockson, one of Woolley's daughters. "He had a very positive attitude, he was determined it would not beat him."
A recent inquest heard that Woolley saw asbestos "lying around like cotton wool" on the floor of the Number Eight store in London and Midland Railways, where he worked during the 1940s, according to the news source.
Woolley was reportedly diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma in December 2007, but the 82-year-old was able to survive until this past December.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause asbestosis and lung cancer.
