Former UK Marine dies after being exposed to asbestos
A former Royal Marine in the UK died after he was reportedly exposed to asbestos while stationed in a combat zone, the Leader reports.An inquest heard recently that 78-year-old John Percival Saxton served in a number of suspected terrorist areas in the Middle East during his 35-year service tenure, according to the news source.
"The whole family is proud of him," said Saxton's son Paul. "He served his country well."
Saxton reportedly died in November, but was exposed to the dangerous mineral while he was protecting a police station in Cyprus in 1955, the inquest was told.
According to the news source, the inquest discovered that Saxton had suffered from malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can cause lung cancer and asbestosis. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people die from asbestos-related diseases around the world each year.
