Former Irish carpenter died of mesothelioma, inquest told
An inquest heard recently that a retired Irish carpenter died last November from mesothelioma that was caused by his exposure to asbestos, which reportedly occurred many years earlier in Britain.The Irish Times reports that 79-year-old Thomas Queenan died at Mayo General Hospital on November 5, after he had been sick for approximately two weeks.
Dr. Cyril Rooney, a physician at the hospital, said that the man had potentially been exposed to asbestos while he worked in Britain between the ages of 24 and 60. Rooney added that it was clear that he suffered from an asbestos-related condition, which subsequently led to his development of mesothelioma.
Rooney explained that asbestos-related disease symptoms can often take many years to manifest themselves after the person is initially exposed to the carcinogen.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos has been proven to cause lung cancer and asbestosis. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 107,000 people around the world die as a result of asbestos-related illnesses each year.
