Fire-damaged UK soccer clubhouse contains asbestos
Games at a soccer club in the UK need to be postponed after a fire burned down the clubhouse, which contains asbestos. The fire has greatly impacted the Alsager Town Football Club, which will lose thousands of pounds due to the blaze, according to This is Staffordshire.
The news source reports that because the building contained asbestos - which was once widely used in the construction industry due to its resistance to fire and insulating properties - it will have to be torn down.
Club chairman Terry Greer explained that the presence of the asbestos has complicated the situation.
"We had 10 firefighters using breathing apparatus, as well as two hose reel jets and a main jet in action," he told the news provider. "It was quite a serious blaze and made worse by the presence of asbestos. The fire left the building completely unsafe and it will need to be demolished."
Asbestos needs to be taken seriously in all instances as exposure to the carcinogenic substance can cause a range of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
