Fire breaks out at UK industrial shed with asbestos-containing roof
Four fire engines were recently dispatched to a fire at an industrial shed in the UK that featured an asbestos-containing roof, reports the Visitor.According to the news source, fire crews from a number of local cities came to fight the blaze, which occurred near Carnforth on October 12.
Due to the fact that both asbestos and gas cylinders could reportedly be found inside the shed, the site has been roped off. Additionally, firefighters hosed down the asbestos-containing roof in order to prevent the dangerous mineral fibers from becoming airborne.
Such precautions are absolutely critical when dealing with asbestos, as the inhalation of these fibers has been proven to cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and the rare cancer malignant mesothelioma. According to the UK newspaper the Mirror, mesothelioma kills one person approximately every five hours in Britain.
The Visitor reports that the Lancashire Fire Service said the situation was under control, but the cause of the fire was not yet clear.
