Family of former UK miner wins asbestos compensation
The family of a former UK miner who died a number of years after the company he worked for experimented with asbestos coating in a pit has been given compensation three years after his death, the BBC reports.According to the news provider, the son and daughters of Ray Noble brought the asbestos case to the Court of Appeal and recently received £72,500 from the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).
Noble had reportedly worked at the former Bevercotes Colliery close to Retford in Nottinghamshire, according to the news source.
Noble was on the job when the National Coal Board tried an experiment that involved coating tunnel walls with asbestos at the colliery. Approximately 35 years after working with the carcinogenic material, Noble reportedly developed malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding most of the body's internal organs.
In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to the dangerous mineral can cause asbestosis and lung cancer. Such asbestos-related diseases kill approximately 107,000 people around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
