Ex-UK health official warns of asbestos danger from industrial site
A former UK health official is warning that harmful substances - including asbestos - are seeping into a river near three schools from an industrial site.WalesOnline reports that Stan Davies says that the substances are seeping from the former Budelpack Cosi site at Ewenny Road Industrial Estate into a river less than half a mile away from three primary schools.
Davies said that he was shocked that attention had not been called to the area sooner.
"It is amazing to me that no-one has picked up on this properly, especially with Cwmfelin, Garth and the Junior Catholic primary schools within half a mile," he told the news source.
Exposure to asbestos can be deadly as the inhalation of the deadly mineral fibers can cause a range of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Asbestos exposure for school children is particularly troubling as the symptoms of these diseases can lie dormant for decades.
Spokesman for Condor Properties, which owns the site, David Aitken said that no one's health is at risk as a result of the asbestos and other materials.
