England native succumbs to malignant mesothelioma
A former English shipbuilder died recently after being exposed to asbestos on a number of occasions throughout his working career. The Bristol Evening Post reports that 81-year-old Peter Royall died at his home just months after receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis from his doctors. According to the news source, Royall's condition had significantly worsened at the time of his death.
During an inquest at Flax Bourton Coroner's Court, assistant deputy coroner Terrence Moore reportedly recorded a verdict of death by industrial disease. Royall was reportedly exposed to asbestos while sawing sheets that contained asbestos.
Moore added that Royall began working as a shipbuilder during the 1940s and his career lasted longer than 20 years, according to the news provider.
Often, the deadly effects of asbestos exposure do not manifest themselves until decades after initial exposure. The illnesses that can stem from such exposure include asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissue surrounding many of the body's internal organs.
