Dilapidated house could pose high asbestos risk
A vacant house on the corner of Main and Boundary in Redland Bay, Queensland, is suspected to contain asbestos, reports the Bayside Bulletin. The house, as well as the entire block, was bought by Queensland Health in 2009 as part of plans to build a new mental health center. Discovery of the building material fibro, which contains asbestos, in the home raised concerns for the company because the mineral has been linked to malignant mesothelioma, according to the news source. Queensland Health must now assess the dangers of building on the proposed site and work to reduce the risk of exposure.
Currently, the health company is not sure how much asbestos is in the house.
"All materials relating to the current buildings on site will be removed safely by accredited contractors as part of the construction process prior to any further development relating to the Bayside CCU," Gary Stevenson, chief executive officer of Redland City Council, told the Bayside Bulletin.
According to The Workers Health Center of Australia, asbestos can also lead to lung cancer and various diseases, such as asbestosis. Queensland Health has posted warning signs around the house to discourage anyone from trespassing, the Bulletin reports.
