Coroner: Former UK soldier died of malignant mesothelioma
A coroner ruled recently that a 95-year-old former UK soldier died from a disease with symptoms that were "overwhelmingly linked" to malignant mesothelioma.According to GetWokingham, an inquest into Stanley Ball's death found that the man had been dealing with the symptoms of the deadly disease since 2003.
While X-rays taken in 2006 and 2007 showed that treatment had been effective in slowing the disease, in 2009 Ball started to have more trouble breathing and was staying in bed for longer hours, according to the news source.
Ball, who served in the Army during World War II, shifted careers after his service concluded and began working on asbestos-containing building sites, the inquest heard. Prior to coming to a verdict, Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford explained that the fact that Ball was able to survive with the deadly illness for such an extended period of time was "extraordinary," reports the news source.
In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure can lead to the development of lung cancer and asbestosis.
