Contract awarded for asbestos abatement, demolition
A Buffalo-based demolition company has won a contract to perform asbestos removal and demolition of an office space and retail complex in New York. The board of the Upstate Empire State Development Corporation is entrusting Ontario Specialty Contracting to tear down the Midtown complex in Rochester, New York. Asbestos abatement at the 8.5 acre site has been underway for several months, according to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
A spokeswoman for Upstate Empire State Development told the news source that the contract is contingent on the state budget being passed, as Governor David Paterson has halted all new contracts.
The new Midtown Plaza will go up at the demolition site, which lawmakers are hoping will revitalize the area.
?The future of the city of Rochester and the success of Midtown Plaza are linked,? U.S. Senator Charles Schumer told the Rochester Business Journal. ?Investing in Midtown will create jobs for people in Rochester and serve as an anchor for a growing and thriving city and region.?
Ontario Specialty Contracting was selected for the project partly because the company has done good work in its previous asbestos abatement and demolition projects. Experience removing asbestos is vital, as any dust from the deadly mineral that escapes the site could cause malignant mesothelioma and asbestosis.
