Asbestos News

Construction work on new UK John Lewis store delayed one month due to asbestos
Construction work on a new John Lewis store in Exeter, UK, has reportedly been put on hold for a month after asbestos was discovered in the former Debenhams building, which is being transformed into the store, the Express & Echo reports.

According to the news provider, once asbestos was discovered work on the building was stopped immediately and it has now become clear that the asbestos abatement will take until the end of April.

A spokesman for the owners of the building, Land Securities, said that the company is looking into any impact the asbestos discovery will have on the timetable for the store's opening.

"Air tests confirmed that there was no asbestos in the air that could be hazardous to the health of workers," the spokesman added. "We can confirm that no one on site has been put at risk."

When asbestos fibers are disturbed during renovation work they can be released into the air. The inhalation of such fibers has been proven to cause a number of deadly diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's inner organs.
