Community center in UK undergoes asbestos removal work
A community center in the UK was recently the focus of an asbestos abatement project.East Rural Youth and Community Association had the naturally occurring substance removed from the boiler room at the Carus Centre in Hoddlesden, according to the Lancashire Telegraph.
ERYCA chairman Bert Clarke said that after the discovery of the asbestos was made it was vital that swift action be taken.
"The news was not good and urgent work was required," he told the news source. "The asbestos dated back to the 1940s and specialists had to remove it from the dry lining of the walls and ceiling."
Many older buildings contain asbestos as the substance was once used as an insulator and flame retardant. However, it was proven by the mid-1960s that exposure to the naturally occurring substance can cause a number of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. Due to these hazards it is essential that the substance is abated whenever it is disturbed.
Recycling company SITA was able to help the center by providing a grant that covered £2,500 in costs of the asbestos removal project, reports the news provider.
