Asbestos News

Cleaning process begins after fire at asbestos-containing UK building
A group of specialists have begun to clear the site of a former asbestos-containing UK school building that was destroyed in a recent arson attack, the BBC reports.

According to the news provider, a number of firefighters worked to put out the blaze at the former Sherwood Hall School in Mansfield on April 4. Soon after the site tested positive for asbestos, it was sealed off, the news source said.

Once the ash is removed, the school buildings will reportedly be demolished, a process that is expected to last three months.

Demolitions of asbestos-containing buildings can take longer than others because it is crucial that the asbestos is handled and disposed of properly. Exposure to the carcinogenic material can cause a range of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that occurs in the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.

The Mansfield District Council, which is overseeing the work, said that the owners of the buildings will be paying for the cleanup.
