Charity ball raises money for asbestos victims
A recent charity ball held in Skipton, England, in the memory of a man who died of an asbestos-related cancer raised £5,800 for a local hospital and a malignant mesothelioma charity.

According to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, the event served to honor Billy Greene, who was diagnosed with the rare cancer in 2010 and died last May at the age of 75. The ball was reportedly organized by Greene's youngest daughter and her niece, the news source said.

A portion of the money raised went to Airedale Hospital's seventh ward, where Greene reportedly spent his final days, with other money being given to ward staff in the form of gift certificates to British retailer Marks & Spencer.

The remainder of the funds raised during the ball reportedly went to the Mesothelioma UK charity, according to the Telegraph and Argus.

In addition to malignant mesothelioma, asbestos exposure has been associated with the development of lung cancer and asbestosis. Such illnesses are responsible for the deaths of approximately 107,000 individuals around the world each year, according to the World Health Organization.
