Asbestos Litigation

Charges brought against UK council following asbestos scare at primary school
The release of asbestos into the environment at a UK primary school has reportedly led to charges being filed against the local county council.

The Express & Star reports the asbestos scare, which is believed to have been caused by contractors disturbing the fibers accidentally while working on a cupboard, forced Glenthorne Primary in Cheslyn Hay to be closed for four months. Additionally, it cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds, the news source said.

Both the Staffordshire County Council and the Health and Safety Executive reportedly initiated probes into the incident, but the Staffordshire council eventually became part of the HSE's investigation, according to the news source.

Charges have also reportedly been brought against the contractor and two workers who were allegedly involved in the incident.

The disturbance of asbestos can lead to the carcinogenic fibers being inhaled by those in the area, potentially leading to serious consequences such as the development of lung cancer, asbestosis and malignant mesothelioma, a rare cancer.
