Mesothelioma News

Canadian man dies 11 years after mesothelioma diagnosis
Paul Douglas from the Vancouver, Canada area died last year, approximately 11 years after he was diagnosed with the deadly asbestos-related cancer malignant mesothelioma, reports the Vancouver Sun.

According to the news provider, Douglas is one of 75 British Columbia natives who succumbed to the rare cancer in 2010.

Across the province, the lives of these people and others who have been killed at work will be commemorated with the national Day of Mourning, the news source said.

"We need to remember that every work-related injury, fatality or disease was and is preventable," said Dave Anderson, WorkSafeBC president and CEO, in a release.

According to the news source, Douglas' mesothelioma likely stems from two decades ago, while he worked around furnaces and oil refineries that had been insulated with asbestos. He was reportedly given a mesothelioma diagnosis in 1999 after he began to experience breathing problems.

Douglas was given three to six months to live, but was able to fend off the disease for 11 years, the news source said.

In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos can cause lung cancer and asbestosis.
