Canadian elementary school classes disrupted over asbestos concerns
Students at the Ecole canadienne-francaise high school in Saskatoon, Canada, have reportedly needed to move their classes to the Gustave Dubois high school due to concerns about the potential presence of asbestos.According to Saskatoon Homepage, the Francophone school district was informed recently that the elementary school gym possibly contains asbestos, leading to the closure of the school for health reasons.
The news source reports that an information session is expected to be held for parents in the near future in order to make them aware of the situation and of what needs to be done to rectify the potential asbestos issue.
In addition to elementary school classes being moved to the high school, preschool students reportedly had the day off and the daycare center was closed after the asbestos discovery, the news provider said.
It is critical that asbestos is handled properly as exposure to the naturally occurring mineral can cause a number of serious illnesses including asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer.
