Canadian daycare to move due to asbestos discovery
The discovery of asbestos in its current facility has led the Willowdale Child and Learning Centre in Guelph, Ontario, to re-locate, possibly as early as the end of this week, according to the Guelph Mercury. The news source reports the daycare center was closed last week when asbestos was found in insulation at the bottom of a door frame. Parents were relieved when they were told their children will be able to relocate, but expressed anger that the building had not been initially tested for asbestos.
"I was shocked when I heard about the evacuation," Jenniffer Langridge, the mother of a 2-year-old who attends Willowdale, said following a recent town hall meeting. "It was just thrown on us. They left people high and dry."
Asbestos can pose serious health risks as the inhalation of the dangerous mineral fibers can lead to the development of asbestosis, lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the tissues surrounding a majority of the body's internal organs.
Parents will reportedly be notified by telephone when the new daycare location is ready to take their children, according to the news source.
