Canadian campus cop: Asbestos responsible for building's condemnation
Campus police at a school in Ontario, Canada, recently had their building condemned because of asbestos. One of the members of the University of Windsor's campus police union told the news source that the force's building was shuttered because asbestos, mold and lead paint had caused some individuals to become ill.
CAW Local 195 financial secretary Mike Dunning told the news source that the school has known about the issues with the structure since 2003.
"There's some serious [expletive deleted] problems with a university that's willing to put their people at risk," he said.
A university spokeswoman told the news provider that the school has been performing maintenance at the building regularly and that it has even undergone improvements over the past few years. She added that the facility was quickly evacuated following its condemnation.
It is vital that asbestos is properly managed as exposure to the naturally occurring material has caused a range of serious illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.
The spokeswoman would not confirm whether asbestos issues were part of the reason the building was condemned, reports the news source.
